Saving Face

There is a particular kind of overwhelm that hits you standing in the skincare aisle.
Everyone around you seems to know exactly what they came for. And there you are, holding a basket, feeling behind on your own face.
I know that consistency is where the results live. I get a professional facial a few times a year, and in the days after, I am flawless about my routine. Cleanse, treat, moisturize, the whole ritual. Then life gets busy, the facial fades into memory, and the routine quietly tapers off. By the time I think about booking the next facial, I have lost whatever ground I gained.
So I did what a lot of us do. I decided to fix it by buying things.
It did not happen all at once. It was a serum here, a toner there, spread over weeks. TikTok did most of the selling. Every scroll had someone new holding up a bottle, promising this was the step I had been missing. And each one made its case alone, as if my face had unlimited room and I had unlimited time, and money. Layer this under that. Add this after that. Do not forget the one that goes on before all the others.
I was chasing glass skin. That dewy, lit-from-within, poreless look that every video promised was just a few more products away. So I kept buying. More steps, more bottles, more chances to get it wrong.
What I ended up with was a crowded shelf and a routine so complicated I knew I could not keep up with it. There was too much to do.
So I stepped back. All the way back. I started by laying everything out, every product I had accumulated. I did the research, learning what each one actually did and whether it matched what I wanted for my skin. Only then could I choose the handful that would make up my simple routine and set the rest aside. I even labeled my day, night, and weekly routine items so I wouldn’t get off track.
And I made myself a rule: I would run the selected routine consistently for six to eight weeks before adding a single new thing. Give it time to actually work before deciding it was not working.
So what happened to all those shelved products I felt guilty about buying? They are not wasted. They are backups. Everything has a job, even if the job right now is waiting. When my simple routine has earned its keep and my skin is ready for more, they will be right there.
And I am committed to holding myself accountable. My effort will be to not taper off, no waiting for the next facial to reset me. The facials are still coming because I need the occasional professional guidance, deep clean and reset. But they were never meant to carry the whole thing. That job belongs to what I do every single day.
Maybe you know the feeling. The crowded shelf, the routine you cannot keep up with, the sense that you are always one product behind. If you do, here is what I would tell you. The answer is probably not another bottle. It is picking a few things that work and showing up for them, day after day, long enough to see what they can do.
Because a working routine is not one you keep adding to. It is one you keep showing up for. After all, it is the skin we’re in.
